I declare a bias. Born and raised adjacent to permanent pasture grazed by cattle, apparently my first sentence uttered was: 'Cows go dee-ords' [Cows go forwards!] – based on my regular observation as a toddler of the cows following each other to be milked! At school, in the Vlth form, our Ethics master asked amid laughter: “When did you last lean on a gate and contemplate a cow?” However, it is a good question because regular contemplation of cattle can be therapeutic in this busy world, as well as being a vital component of their proper care as livestock.
Cattle can be appreciated aesthetically, ecologically, inspirationally, objectively and for their manifold usefulness. This short paper seeks briefly to explore cattle in these various aspects. They share with us their milk, a similar gestation period and propensity to produce single offspring, but their slower metabolic rate makes them restful for us to contemplate … and their usually ordered herd behaviour is instructive for us as well! …………………………
